How Music Heals and Feels Therapeutic? The Science Behind It
Music sometimes sounds therapeutic, sometimes soothing, sometimes soulful and sometimes annoying.
What makes the difference is the mood of the person.
When you are sad, music cheers you up. When you are happy, music makes you dance.
When you are stressed, music makes you relaxed. And when you are disturbed, music makes you calm. And this is why, nowadays, a trendy term exists- music therapy.
But the question is how? How do some high and low sound notes arranged in different patterns, commonly called music, affect a person’s state of mind?
To your surprise, there is a science behind it. According to researchers, music and rhythmic vibrations activate chemical releases within the brain which alters a person’s state physically and mentally. There are four major chemicals which are involved in this.
1. Endorphins
Endorphins are natural hormones that are released by the brain whenever it feels pain or stress. They can help with pain, stress, and mood, and can improve your sense of well-being.
Chemically, these are natural opioids, which are believed to be responsible for decreasing the idea of depression. Listening to music enhances the release of endorphins to the extent that a 30-minute jam session can help minimize chronic pain.
2. Cortisols
They are steroid hormones which are produced by adrenal glands. They are responsible for many things like regulating blood pressure, glucose levels and body metabolism but still are the major hormones causing stress.
Music usually lowers the level of cortisol hence lowering anxiety and stress. According to the research, it has been observed that people who have music playing in their backgrounds have lower levels of cortisol in their bodies.
3. Dopamine
Dopamine, also known as the “feel-good” hormone, is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain in pleasurable moments such as eating, doing exercise and listening to music. So, every time you feel that chilling sensation listening to your favourite song or artist, that’s because of the release of dopamine.
4. Immunoglobulin
Studies show that listening to music causes the release of immunoglobulin i.e. an antibody which is responsible for fighting the foreign substances entering the body. So, yes, all music lovers can proudly say that while doing their favourite task (i.e. listening to music of course), they are actually helping their immune systems and thus making themselves healthier.
So, now even scientifically, You can say “Music not only heals the person’s body but also the soul.”
